Save water at home

The average person uses about 180 liters of water per day in Lebanon and about 40% of this water is consumed for bathroom activities such as bathing, flushing the toilet, bathing, washing hands, shaving and brushing teeth. The bathroom is where the largest amount of household water is consumed, followed by the kitchen and laundry.

How to save water in the bathroom?

  • Detect leaks on a regular basis, a drip from the tap or a small leak in the bathroom wastes about 60 liters of water per day or 1,800 liters per month resulting in a waste of 21,600 liters per year. You can detect a leak in the bathroom by putting 6 drops of food coloring in the flush container and making sure after 20 minutes that the color appears in the toilet drain. If the color appears, you have a toilet leak and you should fix it immediately.
  • Turn off the water tap when brushing your teeth, shaving, and washing your face and hands Do not let water run when brushing teeth, shaving, or washing hands and face. Depending on your tap water pressure, you may be wasting between 8 and 20 liters of water per minute when not in use.
  • Shower or shower in less time. A shorter shower may allow liters of water not to be wasted. If you want to spend more time underwater, you can partially fill the bathtub, which will consume less water during showering.
  • Do not throw waste into the toilet Waste such as tissues or small pieces of waste should be thrown away in the trash and not in the toilet. This may help avoid unnecessary water waste.
  • Equip a low-flow showerhead and a low-flow shower head A low-flow shower head consumes between 5 and 8 liters of water per minute compared to a conventional shower head of 12 to 28 liters per minute. The low flush toilet also reduces waste by allowing control of the amount of water flushed and reducing waste by more than half of the water normally consumed. Older toilets use about 13 liters of water each flush compared to five liters when using a dual flush toilet.
